Deacon' s Corner
February 2012
As we enter this new year, with all its beauty and all its potential, it is always appropriate for us to look back over the year that has just gone by. For some of us this brings about wonderful memories of times when the good Lord has blessed us with positive things in a beautiful life. For some of us it will not be all positive as we've had some hardships and some difficulties along the way. Yes, it's maybe some of us have had illnesses even deaths in the family, or maybe financial hardships or the hardships of losing something or someone that is special to us. If our faith is strong we will know that whatever happened it can it can bring us a little closer to the Lord. Most of the time it is hard to see this as it happens and we can only see it as we look back the full measure of time.
As for our parish, I believe it is grown and become stronger. With the new translation for the liturgy and although I believe may have us were fearful of it I am proud to realize that people are participating and good things are happening. The question is, are you becoming comfortable with the new translation's the new responses at mass, if not are you participating, are you trying, are you using the cards father spent the money to help us in the transition? I know that change is always difficult but if you would only listen closely to many of the prayers that are used, you will find that the meanings have not changed but the words that are used are much more beautiful. Some people still ask me why we had to change that we've been using the old wording for so long. Some people don't realize that the old wording has only been around for the past 50 years. After Vatican II when we started using the language of the people it was thought that the best way to do this was to simplify the language making it much like everyday speech. But now we realize that we have lost much of the beauty of St. Jerome's original translation of the Scriptures into the Latin language. Vatican II allowed us a 50 year trial and now we return to the beauty of the original Latin translation. I would challenge each and every one of us to do our very best to participate and look for the beauty of the new words. It may be a challenge but I know that all of us can do it as many already have. And I pray for each and every one in our parish that this be the greatest year of coming closer to the Lord.
Sincerely, Your Deacon, Richard Cole
